August 29, 2011 : Co-op Internship

Hi, my name is Alex Hui. I am a student studying transportation and logistics at the University of British Columbia. I joined the Sauder School of Business Co-op Program and I worked as a summer intern at DWS Logistics.

This summer was an invaluable experience. I get to see how the “real world” works. Every colleague is professional and is willing to teach me how the warehouse operates.

During the work term I spent half of the time working in sales. My manager Chris Kaulback has taught me how to serve clients. He taught me that the baseline of doing business is to be honest. Whenever we were to approach potential clients, we never promise what we cannot do. When we promise something, we do it right and make sure the clients are satisfied.

I was working in the operations department in the second half of the term. I dealt with day to day operations such order fulfillment. I learnt how to use the our warehouse management system – Pyramid to check real time stock inventories, work in process, cross dock activities and all other warehouse operations. It was not easy to understand the whole process and system in the logistics business since I am new to this industry. Fortunately Sasha and Annie from the operations department has years of experience in the field. They were able to answer all my inquiries about this business.

In short, this summer term in DWS logistics is invaluable.  I am going back to school in September and I am sure I can bring back real life experience back to school and integrate classroom learning with my experience working in DWS.
