Rethinking Warehousing and Logistics
At DWS Logistics, we believe that running efficient operations goes hand in hand with making responsible choices. As expectations around sustainability continue to evolve, our focus remains on practical improvements that benefit our customers, our teams, and the communities where we work.
Here are a few examples of what we’ve been working on.
Smarter Energy Use in Our Facilities
Lighting and equipment are two of the largest energy users in any warehouse environment. That’s why we’ve installed energy-efficient lighting with motion sensors across our facilities. These upgrades help reduce use of electricity, lower maintenance costs, and create a better overall working environment.
We’ve also transitioned to electric forklifts, which reduce on-site emissions compared to fuel-powered equipment, contributing to a cleaner indoor workspace that aligns with our goal of building a safer, cleaner and a quieter work environment.
Reducing Paper through Digitalization
Warehousing and logistics have historically relied on paper-heavy processes. At DWS, we’ve made strong progress in digitizing our workflows to reduce paper use and improve accuracy.
This includes:
- Warehouse Management System (WMS)
- RF scanners for real-time order processing
- Digital documentation
- Dual-monitor workstations
- Electronic invoicing and e-transfer options
Going paper-light doesn’t just help the environment, it also cuts clutter, reduces errors, and increases visibility across the supply chain.
Responsible Waste Management and Recycling
We’ve put recycling programs in place for a wide range of materials, including corrugated cardboard, paper shredding services, printer cartridges, electronics, as well as safe disposal options for batteries and lighting components. These programs help us manage materials more effectively and reduce what ends up in landfill.
We also work with our customers to manage unsaleable products more responsibly. Through our Product Donation Initiative, items that would otherwise be discarded are redirected to verified charitable organizations—providing value to others while minimizing unnecessary disposal.
Improving Freight Operations with SmartWay Certification
Transportation plays a major role in logistics-related emissions. That’s why we continue to evaluate our carrier networks, looking for ways to improve. DWS is proud to hold a SmartWay certification through Natural Resources Canada, a program that promotes more efficient freight movement across the country.
Our commitment to greener logistics is Getting There With Cleaner Air with our SmartWay Transport Partnership.
More than 3,600 North American companies have signed on to the partnership, which was launched by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). SmartWay has been run in Canada by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) since 2012. SmartWay in Canada also works with NRCan’s SmartDriver and the Green Freight Assessment Program to help carriers save fuel. It provides tools and resources to measure, benchmark, and improve freight transportation efficiency. This certification reflects our ongoing commitment to adopting smarter logistics practices. Supporting Local Efforts and Partnerships
At DWS, our operations goes hand in hand with community engagement. Whether it’s donating to sports teams, volunteering at local food banks, or sponsoring initiatives that promote environmental awareness, it helps us stay connected to the communities we work and live in.
An example is our ongoing support for the Conservation Halton Foundation, which works to preserve natural areas and provides opportunities for outdoor recreation and education on local ecosystems.
Through these types of initiatives, we strive to make a meaningful impact in the community beyond our logistics operations.
Let’s Move Forward, Together
At DWS Logistics, we take a realistic and purposeful approach to improvement. Whether we’re upgrading equipment, digitizing workflows, or optimizing transportation, our goal is the same: to run a smarter, more efficient business that meets today’s needs while preparing for tomorrow’s opportunities.
